Why You Should Review Your Insurance Every Year

January 6, 2026 By Monte Burstad

Annual Insurance Review

Life tends to move fast. In a single year, you might buy a new car, finish a basement, or even get married. While these moments are exciting, they often change what you need from your insurance. Most people tend to buy a policy and then forget about it. However, setting aside time for an annual review with your agent can be a smart way to make sure your protection keeps up with your life.

An annual review is basically a check-up for your personal insurance. It is a chance to look at your Homeowners, Auto, and other policies to see if they still make sense for you. Because prices and life situations change, what worked last year might not be the best fit today. Taking a little time to talk with your agent can help you spot things you might have otherwise missed. Many people find that their lives change more than they realize over 12 months, and their insurance should change along with it.

Changes to Your Home and Property

Your home is likely one of your biggest investments. Because of this, keeping your Homeowners insurance up to date is very important. Many people do not realize that the cost to rebuild a house can change over time. If you have made updates to your property, those changes should likely be reflected in your policy so you are not left with a gap in coverage.

Home Remodels and Improvements

If you have spent money to make your home better, your old policy might not reflect the new value. Generally speaking, if you have done any of the following, you may want to mention it during your review:

  • Kitchen or Bathroom Upgrades: New counters, custom cabinets, or high-end appliances can increase the cost to replace your home.
  • Adding a Deck or Patio: Outdoor living spaces are common additions that change your property value and how you use your yard.
  • Finishing a Basement: This adds a lot of livable square footage that should likely be accounted for in your total coverage limit.
  • New Roof: In some cases, a new roof might even help you find a better rate because it makes the home safer from leaks and weather damage.

When you finish a project, it is easy to focus on the new paint or the shiny appliances. However, it is just as important to think about the financial protection for those items. If a kitchen fire were to happen due to a covered loss, you would want your policy to reflect the actual cost of the new materials you just installed.

The Rising Cost of Building Materials

Even if you have not touched a hammer, the cost of wood, shingles, and labor often goes up due to inflation. If your policy limit stays the same for years, it might not be enough to cover the cost of rebuilding after a covered loss. This is why many people choose to have an annual conversation with their agent. An experienced agent can help you look at current local building costs to see if your Homeowners limits should be adjusted to stay current with the market.

Keeping Your Auto Insurance Up to Date

Auto insurance is something most people rarely think about. During a review, you can look at who is driving, how the cars are being used, and if your limits still protect your current lifestyle.

Changes in Your Daily Commute

The way you use your car can change your insurance needs. For example, if you started working from home, you are likely driving fewer miles than you used to. Depending on the company you are insured with, driving fewer annual miles could result in a lower premium. On the other hand, if you started a new job with a long commute, you may want to make sure your Auto policy reflects that change so there are no surprises later.

New Drivers in the House

If you have a teenager who just got their permit or license, you will generally need to add them to your Auto policy. While this usually increases the cost, your agent can help you find ways to manage those expenses. Many companies offer discounts for students who get good grades or take safety courses. Talking about these options during a review can help you plan your budget for the coming year.

The Age of Your Vehicle

As a car gets older, its market value usually drops. For an old car, you might decide that some types of coverage, like collision, is no longer worth the cost. This is a personal choice that depends on your savings and your comfort with risk. A review is the best time to weigh those options and decide if the cost of the coverage makes sense given the value of the car.

Important Milestones and Liability

Insurance is not just about physical items like a car or a house. It is also about protecting your financial future. Liability insurance helps protect your savings and your future income if you are found responsible for an accident. As you gain more assets or reach new life milestones, your need for liability protection generally grows.

  1. Marriage or Divorce: Changing your legal status often means combining policies or splitting them up.
  2. Starting a Small Business: If you started a Business out of your home, your standard Homeowners policy might not cover your equipment or your liability. You should likely talk to an advocate about whether you need a separate Business policy or an endorsement to your current one.
  3. Buying High-Value Items: If you bought an expensive engagement ring, a rare coin collection, or fine art, these items may have limited coverage under a standard policy. You might need to add a special “rider” to ensure they are protected in the event of a covered loss.

Understanding Your Deductibles and Costs

One of the most common reasons to have an annual review is to look at your budget. Most people want to save money, and there are several ways to look at costs without losing the protection you need. An experienced agent can help you find a balance that feels right for your bank account.

The Balance Between Deductibles and Premiums

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurance company steps in to help. Generally speaking, if you choose a higher deductible, your monthly premium will be lower. During your review, you can ask yourself if you have enough savings to cover a higher deductible if an accident happens. If you have more money in the bank now than you did last year, raising your deductible might be a way to lower your monthly bills.

Looking for New Discounts

Insurance companies change their discount programs from time to time. You might now qualify for a discount that did not exist when you first signed up. Common discounts that an advocate might look for include:

  • Security Systems: Installing a burglar alarm or smoke detectors that call the fire department can often lead to savings.
  • Paperless Billing: Choosing to get your statements through email instead of the mail is a simple way to save a few dollars.
  • Paying in Full: Paying for six months or a year at once instead of month-to-month can sometimes reduce the total cost.
  • Safe Driver Programs: Some companies offer lower rates if you use a plug-in device or a phone app that tracks safe driving habits.

How to Prepare for Your Review

A review does not have to be long or difficult. It is usually just a simple conversation over the phone or in person. To make the most of it, you might want to have a few things ready before you speak with your experienced advocate:

  • A list of any big purchases you made in the last year, like jewelry or electronics.
  • An idea of how many miles you are driving each year on each of your vehicles.
  • A list of any safety upgrades you made to your home, such as a new security camera system.
  • Any questions you have about what your policy actually does and what it does not do.

Remember, we are an advocate for you. We are there to listen to your concerns and help you understand the fine print. You should feel free to ask questions if something sounds confusing. There are no bad questions when it comes to protecting your family and your property.

Final Thoughts on Annual Reviews

An annual insurance review is a simple way to stay organized and prepared. It helps ensure that your Homeowners and Auto policies are doing what you expect them to do. While no policy covers every possible situation, staying informed is the best way to avoid surprises.

By talking with an experienced advocate once a year, you can make sure your coverage keeps up with your life. Whether you are saving money with new discounts or increasing your limits because of a home remodel, a quick check-up is usually worth the time. It gives you the chance to breathe easy, knowing that you have looked at your options and made the best choices for your situation.

Documents To Gather for Your Annual Insurance Review

Getting ready for a talk with your agent is a great way to make sure your meeting is productive. While you do not need to have every single receipt, having a few key items ready can help your listener understand your current life. Generally speaking, being prepared allows you to focus on finding the right protection for your Homeowners and Auto needs.

The following list includes items that are often helpful to have on hand during your review.

Your Current Insurance Policies

It is usually a good idea to have your current “declarations pages” nearby. These are the pages that show your coverage limits and what you are paying now.

  • Auto Policy Details: This shows your current deductibles and which cars are on the plan.
  • Homeowners Policy Details: This includes the estimated cost to rebuild your home and your liability limits.
  • Other Policies: If you have an Umbrella or Life policy, having those details can help your advocate see the big picture.

Home and Property Records

If you have made changes to where you live, these documents can help ensure your Homeowners coverage is accurate.

  • Home Improvement Receipts: If you finished a basement or remodeled a kitchen, have a rough idea of what you spent.
  • Safety Upgrade Proof: If you installed a new security system or smoke alarms, keep the certificates or receipts. In some cases, these can lead to new discounts.
  • New Roof Documentation: Having the date your new roof was finished is very helpful for your Homeowners record.

Vehicle and Driving Information

Because your daily habits can change, keeping your Auto information current is a smart move.

  • Current Mileage: It is helpful to check the odometer on each car so you can give an accurate estimate of your annual miles.
  • Commute Changes: If you moved or changed jobs, knowing the new distance to your office is important.
  • New Driver Information: If a child just got a permit, have their date of birth and license number ready.

Special Items and Personal Assets

Standard policies often have limits on certain types of property. To protect these due to a covered loss, you may need extra documentation.

  1. High-Value Receipts: If you bought a new piece of jewelry, expensive electronics, or fine art, keep the sales receipts.
  2. Professional Appraisals: For very rare or old items, a recent appraisal can help set the right value for your coverage.
  3. Business Information: If you started a small business from home, have a list of any equipment you use for work.

Questions and Future Plans

Finally, take a moment to write down any life changes you expect in the coming year. Generally speaking, knowing your plans helps your agent prepare for your future.

  • Upcoming Moves: Are you planning to buy a new home or rent an apartment?
  • Big Purchases: Do you plan on buying a new car or a boat soon?
  • General Concerns: Write down any parts of your policy that seem confusing so you can ask for a simple explanation.

Having these items ready helps you and your friendly advocate work together to find the best fit for your budget and your family.

Feel free to call or email us if you have any questions or would like to schedule a review.

Burstad Insurance’s River Falls location is responsive, cares about my personal circumstances, and takes the time to explain coverage options so I have the context I need to make informed decisions. Highly recommend!
Andrew Z.
Had a positive experience until I had to cancel my insurance with them due to moving out of state.

Update: The agency addressed all of the issues quickly and in a positive manner, thus changing my review to fit my overall experience.
Margie M.
Outstanding service and very knowledgeable representative.

Do not do business here. We were mislead about the coverage provided to our business by Missy Kraemer. When this came to light, we went to change providers and find adequate coverage. Missy acted extremely unprofessional and refused to send us the documents we needed! She said it wasn't her job to help us. A terrible experience with a rude, unprofessional person. Do yourself a favor and find literally any other insurance provider.
Sam C.
After waiting a week for someone to get back to me about my request for quotes, they sent me an email saying “We can’t find you coverage because you have a pitbull mix dog. Sorry.” Which doesn’t make sense because somehow I currently have insurance and I’ve gotten 3 quotes on my own now that will all cover my dog. Complete waste of time.
Rellen H.
Friendly, proactive. Summer is very good at finding options and explaining changes to the insurance industry.
Jr S.
Such nice people I love the insurance rates so amazing.

Thanks for your always friendly and fast service! I appreciate what you do!

Bursted has had my business for years. When I lived in town, I appreciated stopping in to get quotes so I could talk to the owner about business and community. The staff is helpful and friendly, and I appreciate how patient they are when answering my questions about insurance. Insurance is not my favorite adult chore to tackle, but everyone at Burstad makes me feel like I’m connected to a human that knows how to explain what will serve my needs. They’re also a brokerage and have the ability to check multiple providers at once for you! Yay!!!
Nick E.
Great customer service and caring staff.

We too had a horrible experience with Doug! Unfortunately we had to find out the hard way when we had a small fire/smoke damage in our office space. Not only were we under insured, we were overcharged on our commercial policy for years!!!!! He and the owner of this agency were absolutely zero help when it came to dealing with this claim, the tenants insurance company and the insurance adjuster that would never return our calls, it was a complete NIGHTMARE! We were all on our own and we feel that once this happened, they knew that our agent screwed up when it came to this policy that he put together or lack there of and thought if they would just ignore us we would walk away. Not only did we walk away, we ran!! Had 3 other agents review it and could not believe how much we were under insured and several gaps in the policy that were missing, like loss of income, loss assessment coverage, just to name a few, things that are no brainers when it comes to commercial insurance. The only good that came out of this entire experience is that we learned alot about insurance and now have a very competent agent that physically went to all our properties, took pictures and sat down with us, at our home and a 3 page checklist to see what we needed or didn't need for our insurance needs. He even pointed out that our agent had our rate almost 3 times higher than it should have been, meaning we were getting ripped off, big time!!! We would have filed a complaint with the insurance commissioner of WI but reviews said not to waste your time, they wont do anything. Now we have double the coverage for our properties for HALF of what we were spending with this agency. Oh and our home and auto policy was lacking as well but was also reviewed and now has the proper coverage for our needs. Our advice, go somewhere else for your insurance so this doesn't happen to you!! This agency doesn't even deserve 1 star!
Jeanne R.
I really appreciate their friendly, prompt and knowledgeable assistance. We have been with them for years, and are consistently happy with their service.

This insurance company allows its employees to be racist. Doug treated me as if someone had a gun to his head every time he dealt with me. During a conversation I overheard him call me the “N” word and say how he wish he didn’t have to deal with my kind. The new management didn’t care how I was being treated so I switched insurance agents all together. Furthermore, I have asked numerous times for them to STOP harassing me by sending me emails and mailings but they have refused. I unsubscribed 4 times from their emails but the emails keep coming 2 years later. I’ve made numerous phone calls asking them to remove me from their lists but that hasn’t happened yet either!!!. My next step is to file an official report of Harrassment with the state of Wisconsin. I wouldn’t use this company to insure bubblegum lil less a boat, car or your home. I’d give them a zero rating if I could. There’s no place for racism in this world.
Roxanne S.
Valorie provided excellent service and quickly found us the best insurance policy and rates available. Thank you, Burstad Insurance!
Mindy A.
Family and Burstad worked their magic and found insurance even cheaper than what I was paying. They are very responsive when adding or changing things to a policy and they stick up for their customers when a bank may try to manipulate the home insurance for no apparent reason. Well done Burstad. I highly recommend.
Jason W.

Very difficult to try to make contact. Insurance Policy Letterhead says that the website is www.nr-ins.com. But this doesn't get me anywhere. Tried to google New Richmond Insurance, and about 20 companies show up. I didn't realize that this is now called Burstad Insurance. Finally found it on facebook, but they don't monitor that account, and don't respond to messages posted on that account.
Peter T.
Great place
Marissa L.
I had this insurance for a couple years everything was great until I wanted to add gap to my insurance plan. (My loan company did not offer it at the time I purchased my Vehicle) At the time of the switch I wanted to update the bank information for my automatic payment withdrawals which started the problems from here. They proceeded to try and pull from the old account(even after I gave new banking information) which almost caused me overdraft fees so I had to contact the bank to make sure Burstad Insurance could not withdraw money out of that account. I than had to do a one time debit payment with them because of a problem Burstad Insurance created. Process to the next month I’m being contacted to pay more than the original agreed priced and for banking information, which had previously been given to them and than told by the guy that owns the company I owe for a month I had already paid. (Had proof of payment that was pulled from the bank account)

Overall was not pleased or satisfied with the customer service received from this insurance company so I switched to Progressive and pay even less!!! (:
Jeremy M.
Monte and his team are great to work with. They were extremely helpful in getting our business up off the ground and getting the needed items to be successful. I would highly recommend them for your business!
Denise V.
Great to work with!
Dawn B.
Everyone here has been very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly! Whenever I contact them, they get back to me quickly and are sure to get me the best rates possible. Thank you! The Baldwins
Kelly S.
I'm giving them 3 stars only because I was insured by them for 11 years..I changed insurance providers when my daughter got her license. they automatically put her on my insurance policy as a first time driver weather she was now driving or not but just because she was a licensed driver in my household. $287.00 jump from the $64.00 what I was paying for myself was crazy. Yes I called them and tried to dispute this but they refused to remove my daughter and started taking payments out of my account... so I was done with them ,cancelled my insurance policy, and got a better insurance that same day for half the cost plus I now have better coverage.
Isaac F.
I visited this office for a quote. During a pandemic, no one was wearing a mask or distancing. For a company preaching safety and preparedness it seemed strange. I turned around and left when I overheard an employee, who I assumed was an office lead, espousing her religious beliefs were going to save her rather than science. Who works in insurance with an attitude like that?
Drillbit S.
They just want your money, Our agent was quite condescending when he would talk with us we were a new business. Prices were OK, But our agent definitely thought he had a chip on his shoulder.
Randy Chico J.
Have had my insurance for different vehicles and homes for many years, always friendly and am very satisfied.

I recently purchased a new vehicle and had Teresa add it to my policy. She told me she added it and i was all set to go. 3 weeks later i find out she did nothing and i had been driving my brand new vehicle around without any insurance coverage. She said on several different occasions that she would email me new quotes, but i never heard back.
