Useful Advice to Avoid Fire and Water Damage

December 2, 2024 By Monte Burstad

Water Leak

Being in the insurance industry allows us to empathize with the impact disasters can have on families emotionally and financially. It’s something we witness firsthand all too often. While insurance provides financial support for recovery after a loss occurs, taking steps to avoid such situations altogether is even more beneficial. Preventing harm to your home not only saves you money compared to dealing with the aftermath but also prioritizes your family’s safety and peace of mind.

This blog post will discuss the measures you can implement to protect your home against two threats: fire and water damage. It will help you steer clear of the anxiety and unpredictability that comes with such losses and safeguard what holds the most value to you.

Fire Safety Measures to Safeguard Your Home and Family

Many fires can lead to damage; however, it is comforting to know that with the right safety measures in place, a lot of them can be avoided altogether. Here are some proactive measures you can take to lower your chances of experiencing such a disaster;

Remember to set up and maintain smoke detectors in your home.

Having Smoke Alarms in Your Home Is Crucial for the Early Detection of Fires. Remember To:

  • Place smoke detectors on each floor of your house, in every bedroom, and near areas where people sleep.
  • Remember to check your detectors every month to ensure they function correctly.
  • Make sure to change the batteries annually.
  • It is recommended that a smoke alarm be replaced every 10 years.

Remember to Follow Safety Guidelines When Cooking.

Cooking mishaps cause many house fires. To lower the chances of a fire at home:

  • Always stay near the stove when cooking food. Don’t leave your stove unattended.
  • Make sure to store flammable items such as paper towels and dishcloths away from the stove.
  • Turn the pot handles inward to avoid any grease spills.
  • It’s essential to have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and be familiar with how to operate it.

Ensure the Operation of Heating Devices.

Heating appliances, like space heaters and fireplaces, can also cause fires. Here are some guidelines to stay safe:

  • Make sure to place space heaters three feet from anything that can catch fire.
  • Remember to switch off space heaters before exiting a room or at bedtime.
  • Make sure to clean and check your fireplace and chimney annually.
  • Utilize a fireplace screen to control the sparks and embers within the fireplace.

Ensuring Safety Around Electricity.

Issues related to electricity also pose a risk of causing fires in homes. You can minimize these risks by taking the following steps:

  • Avoid using extension cords that are damaged or frayed.
  • Avoid plugging devices into overloaded outlets or extension cords.
  • When it comes to electrical work, hiring a certified electrician is important.
  • Make sure to have a certified electrician check for and update defective wiring.

Make a Plan for Escaping Your Home in Case of Fire.

Emergencies can still occur despite taking all precautions; ensure your family is ready by:

  • Developing an emergency evacuation strategy.
  • Regular drills are crucial when it comes to working with kids.
  • Make sure everyone in the family understands how to leave the house and where to gather outside if needed.

Preventing Water Damage in Your Home

Damage from water can be just as harmful as fire because it can result in expensive fixes and lasting problems such as mold growth. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize the likelihood of this happening.

Ensure You Take Care of Your Roof and Gutters to Keep Them in Good Condition.

Your roof and gutters protect your home from water damage. It’s important to maintain them properly to ensure their effectiveness.

  • Check your roof every year to see if there are any damaged shingles.
  • Remember to clean out your gutters and downspouts to prevent blockages and maintain drainage systems.
  • Make sure to fix any leaks to avoid further harm.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

In regions where it freezes during winter months, frozen pipes often lead to water damage issues. to avoid situations from occurring:

  • Make sure to wrap the pipes in areas without heat, such as basements and crawl spaces, to prevent freezing during cold weather.
  • Remember to let your faucets drip a little when it’s extremely cold to prevent the water from freezing.
  • Make sure to keep your house heated above freezing when you’re not around for an extended period of time.
  • Remember to turn off and empty out the faucets and sprinkler systems before winter sets in.

Set up a Sump Pump and Backup System.

Need help with your basement flooding? A sump pump could be what you need to keep things under control! Remember to:

  • Check your sump pump is functioning well. Undergoes testing to ensure its performance.
  • Have a battery system or generator for situations when there is a power outage.

Utilize Water Sensors to Detect Water Ingress.

Leveraging technology can help detect leaks, which is worth exploring and implementing proactively.

  • Setting up water sensors close to household appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, near water heaters, and beneath kitchen sinks.
  • Employing a water monitoring system that notifies you of any strange water usage patterns.

Seal the Windows and Doors to Keep out Drafts and Bugs.

Water might find its way into your house through openings in windows or doors and cracks in the foundation. You can prevent this from happening by taking these measures:

  • Make sure to add and maintain weatherstripping around the doors and windows.
  • Make sure to seal any cracks in the foundation using caulking or epoxy.
  • Consider adding window well covers to prevent rainwater from getting in.

Why Investing in Prevention Pays Off

It might be tempting to believe that nothing bad will happen to you personally. In truth, fires and water damage occur more frequently than many people might think.

Ensure the safety of your loved ones.

  • Save money by avoiding expensive repairs in the future.
  • Safeguard your possessions and cherished memories.
  • Minimize the inconvenience of a loss disrupting your weekly routine.

As your insurance representative, we’re here to assist you not only overcoming losses but preventing them entirely. By taking these steps, you demonstrate your dedication to safeguarding your home, your family, and your financial stability.’

Exploring the Role of Insurance in Preventative Measures.

These precautions can reduce your chances of mishaps. Remember that no residence is completely safe from events or acts of nature, necessitating insurance coverage to safeguard your property and possessions adequately. Make it a point to scrutinize your home insurance policy to confirm it offers security for your house and personal effects. If you’re uncertain about the extent of your coverage or require advice on the matter, feel free to reach out to us for assistance.

We can also suggest coverages that you may find beneficial;

  • Coverage for Water Backup: Safeguarding your property from harm caused by sewers or drains.
  • Extended Replacement Coverage ensures that you are adequately protected to reconstruct your property in case construction expenses increase.

Do not do business here. We were mislead about the coverage provided to our business by Missy Kraemer. When this came to light, we went to change providers and find adequate coverage. Missy acted extremely unprofessional and refused to send us the documents we needed! She said it wasn't her job to help us. A terrible experience with a rude, unprofessional person. Do yourself a favor and find literally any other insurance provider.

After waiting a week for someone to get back to me about my request for quotes, they sent me an email saying “We can’t find you coverage because you have a pitbull mix dog. Sorry.” Which doesn’t make sense because somehow I currently have insurance and I’ve gotten 3 quotes on my own now that will all cover my dog. Complete waste of time.

Such nice people I love the insurance rates so amazing.

Thanks for your always friendly and fast service! I appreciate what you do!

Bursted has had my business for years. When I lived in town, I appreciated stopping in to get quotes so I could talk to the owner about business and community. The staff is helpful and friendly, and I appreciate how patient they are when answering my questions about insurance. Insurance is not my favorite adult chore to tackle, but everyone at Burstad makes me feel like I’m connected to a human that knows how to explain what will serve my needs. They’re also a brokerage and have the ability to check multiple providers at once for you! Yay!!!
Nick E.
Great customer service and caring staff.

We too had a horrible experience with Doug! Unfortunately we had to find out the hard way when we had a small fire/smoke damage in our office space. Not only were we under insured, we were overcharged on our commercial policy for years!!!!! He and the owner of this agency were absolutely zero help when it came to dealing with this claim, the tenants insurance company and the insurance adjuster that would never return our calls, it was a complete NIGHTMARE! We were all on our own and we feel that once this happened, they knew that our agent screwed up when it came to this policy that he put together or lack there of and thought if they would just ignore us we would walk away. Not only did we walk away, we ran!! Had 3 other agents review it and could not believe how much we were under insured and several gaps in the policy that were missing, like loss of income, loss assessment coverage, just to name a few, things that are no brainers when it comes to commercial insurance. The only good that came out of this entire experience is that we learned alot about insurance and now have a very competent agent that physically went to all our properties, took pictures and sat down with us, at our home and a 3 page checklist to see what we needed or didn't need for our insurance needs. He even pointed out that our agent had our rate almost 3 times higher than it should have been, meaning we were getting ripped off, big time!!! We would have filed a complaint with the insurance commissioner of WI but reviews said not to waste your time, they wont do anything. Now we have double the coverage for our properties for HALF of what we were spending with this agency. Oh and our home and auto policy was lacking as well but was also reviewed and now has the proper coverage for our needs. Our advice, go somewhere else for your insurance so this doesn't happen to you!! This agency doesn't even deserve 1 star!

I really appreciate their friendly, prompt and knowledgeable assistance. We have been with them for years, and are consistently happy with their service.

This insurance company allows its employees to be racist. Doug treated me as if someone had a gun to his head every time he dealt with me. During a conversation I overheard him call me the “N” word and say how he wish he didn’t have to deal with my kind. The new management didn’t care how I was being treated so I switched insurance agents all together. Furthermore, I have asked numerous times for them to STOP harassing me by sending me emails and mailings but they have refused. I unsubscribed 4 times from their emails but the emails keep coming 2 years later. I’ve made numerous phone calls asking them to remove me from their lists but that hasn’t happened yet either!!!. My next step is to file an official report of Harrassment with the state of Wisconsin. I wouldn’t use this company to insure bubblegum lil less a boat, car or your home. I’d give them a zero rating if I could. There’s no place for racism in this world.

Valorie provided excellent service and quickly found us the best insurance policy and rates available. Thank you, Burstad Insurance!

Family and Burstad worked their magic and found insurance even cheaper than what I was paying. They are very responsive when adding or changing things to a policy and they stick up for their customers when a bank may try to manipulate the home insurance for no apparent reason. Well done Burstad. I highly recommend.

Kelly S.
I'm giving them 3 stars only because I was insured by them for 11 years..I changed insurance providers when my daughter got her license. they automatically put her on my insurance policy as a first time driver weather she was now driving or not but just because she was a licensed driver in my household. $287.00 jump from the $64.00 what I was paying for myself was crazy. Yes I called them and tried to dispute this but they refused to remove my daughter and started taking payments out of my account... so I was done with them ,cancelled my insurance policy, and got a better insurance that same day for half the cost plus I now have better coverage.

I visited this office for a quote. During a pandemic, no one was wearing a mask or distancing. For a company preaching safety and preparedness it seemed strange. I turned around and left when I overheard an employee, who I assumed was an office lead, espousing her religious beliefs were going to save her rather than science. Who works in insurance with an attitude like that?
Response from the owner:Isaac, I am so sorry about your experience in our office, although we do not require masks by our staff being that they are all at least 6ft. feet socially distanced, we will always respect the views of our walk in customers. I am sorry that you had a negative experience at our office, but we would love the opportunity to set up a meeting with one of our highly experienced agents. We would make sure that everyone would be masked so that you feel comfortable. Thank you for your feedback.
Drillbit S.
They just want your money, Our agent was quite condescending when he would talk with us we were a new business. Prices were OK, But our agent definitely thought he had a chip on his shoulder.

I also know that the person I am working with will have an understanding of my history and my policy. Highly recommend! Thanks and keep up the good work!
Joshua E.
I recently purchased a new vehicle and had Teresa add it to my policy. She told me she added it and i was all set to go. 3 weeks later i find out she did nothing and i had been driving my brand new vehicle around without any insurance coverage. She said on several different occasions that she would email me new quotes, but i never heard back.

Corey Burstsad Insurance is great!! Neil always goes out of way for his clients, very trustworthy and efficient.

Very friendly and helpful. Got is a great deal and we were refered there by a good friend after not being able to find what we wanted elsewhere. They made the process very easy and didn't mind us popping by last minute to get the details figured out.
